Project Description

Cineca Offices

Bologna, Italy

The Edificio CINECA Ala Polifunzionale is a landmark example of sustainable architectural design, having been awarded the prestigious LEED Gold certification in October 2016 under the rigorous LEED Italia 2009 Nuove Costruzioni rating system. The project, which began in 2011, showcases an innovative architectural concept featuring a shared ground floor from which two distinct towers emerge, one with two stories and the other with three.

The design prioritizes environmental sustainability through a variety of features, including a sophisticated building automation system that optimizes energy use and efficiency. The building integrates common relational spaces that encourage collaboration and interaction, alongside well-designed office areas and multifunctional halls that adhere to the highest environmental standards. One of the standout features of the project is the implementation of green roofs, which contribute to improved insulation, reduced urban heat island effects, and the promotion of biodiversity.

A key focus of the project from the outset was to create a structure that minimizes its environmental footprint while enhancing the quality of the indoor and outdoor environments. The client’s commitment to sustainability was evident from the initial planning stages, driving innovative approaches in energy efficiency, resource management, and environmentally friendly construction practices. These efforts culminated in an impressive LEED score of 72/100, surpassing the initial expectations and underlining the project’s success in achieving a high standard of green building excellence.
